Our ground glass element is larger than a 35mm film plane so the entire focal length of the 35mm lens is projected onto the element. You zoom in to the ground glass to optimize as little or as much of this projected image as you wish. So, if you zoom to the 35mm frame size, a 50mm lens will maintain a 50mm focal length.
