What are the batteries in the adapter for?

The image from the 35mm lens is projected onto a frosted piece of ground glass much like a 35mm SLR Film camera. The batteries run a small motor that vibrates this ground glass in a random pattern very quickly. The fast motion blurs out the texture of the grain in the glass so the camera sees a smooth surface. This gives you a clean image with no grain.
